Regional Spotlight: MoDeBree

The card reads, "MoDeBree, rhythm & Blues ... rock & soul." Since their first gig in February, 1999 this Richmond-based band has been spreading their sound at venues throughout eastern Virginia. Their gigs include big doses of the music so aptly described on their calling card. They cook up their stylistic approach into a Blues stew that will whet one's musical appetite.

MoDeBree is a culmination of the music experiences of Kelli and Kevin Moss. Listening to live entertainment in the late '90s, Kelli and Kevin became aware that some performing bands lacked the energy and emotion of those who live through the Blues. Kevin notes, "there was a need for adult live entertainment. Music that not only you could dance to, but also sit at a bar and carry on a conversation. Not so loud that you have to hide in a corner."

Why a band? Kelli states, "It was the thing to do at the time. Kevin, a fine musician with incredible arrangement knowledge had always been in a band." Her desire to sing and enjoy the band experience with him progressed into organizing the band. After hearing Big Mama Thornton sing "Hound Dog," the genuine emotion moved her on a gut level. Where there is a will, there is a way, and thus MoDeBree transformed from an idea into a working band.

Naming a band, may be a difficult task. A concert excursion several years ago provided the Moss's this opportunity. Noting along the roadside there was much spillage of trash (more debris), a great band name was born. A name that arrives effortlessly and easily falls off of one's lips is usually a good fit. Today, MoDeBree consists of Kelli Moss (vocals and rhythm guitar), Kevin Moss (vocals and bass), Steve Utt (keyboards), Ron Hill (vocals and lead guitar), and Johnny Morris (vocals and drums) - a combination of talent that has evolved into a tight R&B combo. Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, McKinley Morganfield, Willie Dixon, Bobby Troup, Susan Tedeschi, and The Funky Meters are a few of the influences on the MoDeBree sound. An evening with MoDeBree provides a foot tappin', dancin', movin', groovin', smiling musical experience.

"A great, energetic rock & roll Blues band. Although Kelli is new to the live music scene she can growl with the best cats on the block and sounds like a 30-year veteran - go see 'em." - Billy Ray Hatley (Big City) See them ... and visit their website at www.MoDeBree.com for a listing of venues and concert dates.
